Malapo's Astro Safari

"Twinkle, Twinkle little Star, how I wonder what you are..." Malapo Country Lodge boasts a unique "ASTRO BOMA" equipped with one of the largest commercially available telescopes.

Guests have the opportunity to join us in the observatory after dinner where their journey of the Milky Way begins. Under the guidance of a "star ranger", African star-lore becomes alive as we explore the brilliance of the Southern Hemisphere's night sky.

We journey from the moon to deep space where the mystique of the heavens becomes intriguing. Our guests' astronomical safari compliments an African Experience by including a view of one of the most magnificent sights that nature has to offer. South Africa is a world in one country -Malapo Country Lodge is a pinpoint in the Universe.

We listen to stories of ancient tales of human interaction with the heavens above, while we journey from the moon into deep space. Stories of the Khoikhoi and San, the Sotho and Tswana, Nguni and Swazi form a rich tapestry of legends filled with tradition and African mystic. The stories are enchanting and bring Africa, its people, cultures and creatures into an insightful and magical journey.

Observatory sessions take place  only if  the weather is conducive to good clear skies. We strongly recommend that guests book a two night stay if they are interested in our astronomical safari. This experience is unique and not to be missed.

The Moon

The best time to visit Malapo Country Lodge for an Astro Safari, is at New Moon. This means that the moon is not visible.  During this period, viewing of deep space objects are optimal as the big light bulb in the sky (the moon) has been "switched off".

Guests must please note that there will be no observing sessions during a Full moon period, as the moon's light becomes too blinding. Please consult the moon calendar table below.

Cost

There is a maximum charge of R200 per person per astronomy session. The rate  charged will depend on the viewing conditions and the duration of the session. We do not believe in charging our guests an all inclusive rate, because we would not like to charge them for this activity should the weather not be conducive  to good clear skies. We cannot be held responsible for the weather therefore, no refunds will be considered should we experience inclement weather during your visit resulting in our not being able to use the telescope.

Regretfully, no children under the age of 12 years will be allowed on the astro safari due to the sensitivity of the equipment. Should you require a babysitter, this can be arranged.

Comfort

Guests are requested to please bring warm clothing for the ASTRO safari, especially during the winter months. Although it is cold in winter, this is the best time to visit us for the Astro Safari.

Amateur Astronomers

We encourage all amateur astronomers to bring their own telescopes with them when visiting us. It does not matter how "big" or "small" the scope!!!

Liam Thomas is one of our young amateur astronomers and visits Malapo at regular intervals.
